Rock Your Baby

JAMC-Peel Sessions

Very few bands are able to sync into the certain mindset it takes to incorporate pop with an ugly side, and by ugly I mean noise. Scottland's JAMC need no introduction. Psychocandy is one of the greatest records ever made. Their peel sessions recordings require blood, alcohol, and a little teenage angst while listening; all while chewing as much gum as humanly possible.

The Jacks-Vacant World

Vacant world is a Japanese psychedelic record that shifted  Japanese rock's sound from copycat American rhythm and blues to a sound that is strictly Japanese. I don't need to mention how beloved this album has been by those that transcended psychedelic rock but just take a look at the singer, Yoshio Hayakawa. That look did for Japan what Brian Jones did for England or Bob Dylan for the U.S.

             LOVE GENERATION

The Scientists-Blood Red River

Kim Salmon leading the way for some buzz-saw tunes from Australia. Blood red river compiles their material from 1982-1984. This gives the cramps' releases a run for their money and though that's difficult to imagine, even the weakest tracks ooze abrasiveness.

                            BACKWARDS MAN

John Maus-Songs

This record was at one point considered to be one of the absolute worst ever recorded, released, made, and heard. I don't have to tell you how pitchfork is now all up on this guy's nuts gobbling up every ounce of ejaculate emerging from him. He deserves the recognition though. This is his first release and my personal favorite.

    MANIAC

Loop-Heaven's End

It's quite a shame that S3 needs to be mentioned every time someone blurts out the name Loop. The influences are there, no doubt, but loop's biggest tool is distortion, not the psychedelic gimmick that sometimes emerges from later S3 releases. Heaven's End is them at their rawest. If there's one requirement needed for a rock and roll record, it should be that technicality and musical prowess must be thrown out the window and amplifier volume should be cranked. This album is an exemplification of that.  Outside of WOLF FLOW, their peel sessions recording, this is them at their finest.

Straight to your Heart

Hunting Lodge-Will

80's industrial album. Stuff that legends are made of.                    WILL

Shiny Crystal Planet

Masona and Angel'in Heavy Syrup getting together to form Christine 23 Onna; psych that is too good to pass up. This project eventually became Acid Eater, a more rough around the edges, fuzzed-out version of the original incarnation with two members added.

Steady Dose of Acid in my Diet

Tymes Gone By

A hard to find compilation of 60's British garage bands. All killer, no filler.

                                             TGB

Mephisto Cigars

Satanic campfire songs from Arizona. 2/3 of Sun City Girls collaborating with Eddy Detroit. Video made by demonbabies from California, who happens to be the man behind the release of the incredible Anagram Jam compilation.

If you're curious about the comp, here's the starting track. Vandal Cock.

Jackson C. Frank

I seem to tumble in the wind, I wait for it to begin
and when I look at you, I ain't too proud to say I once loved a girl this way
I bring trouble on my lonesome self, I see danger in each offered help
times are hard, and money just won't come through
I'd be alone if not for you.

SPACE FUNERAL

The end of the road in the search for the ultimate cult band.

Toadliquor

I know I'm pissing off a handful of people when I say this but Toadliquor remains atop the Southern Lord roster as the architects of anguished, turtle-paced riffing that just crushes. SL will never top Hortator's Lament, ever.

Last fm's description:
Toadliquor just doesn’t understand. Like a Roman slave, chained for life with oar in hand to an ancient galley, just a floating hunk of wood that he has barely a modicum of control over, Toadliquor are forever strapped to their own sound: A vessel of enormous weight floating over perilous unplumbed depths, always a moment away from the potential disaster; but never in possession of the knowledge of why.

And like the great blind god of the forge, Hepheastus, always straining to bring elegance out of hunks of raw molten earth, Toadliquor are eternally yearning to find beauty and spiritual tranquillity in the roar that surrounds them. They can’t see why, and could never explain how; it’s just an essence that Toadliqour doesn’t understand.

Remo Voor

German punk from 1979. They released a 7" and nothing else. The track 'toilet love' can be found on the Bloodstains across Germany compilation although the highlight of the 45 is 'frogrammer' which can be found on the seventh Killed by Death compilation, which I highly recommend you get along with all the others. Sloppy, simple punk rock done the right way; as sloppily and simply as possible.

You can purchase the reissue of this 45 on Rich Bitch records.

Khanate

Before the Sunn O))) fame became the phenomena that it now is, members of OLD and Burning Witch got together to form the slowest, most gruesome, and painful drone band of all time by the name of Khanate. This was their first attempt at doing so and quite frankly, I feel that not only did they succeed but this may well be music to perform satanic ritual abuse to. I kid...

Sound of Confusion

Perhaps one of the most significant rock albums of all time. I tend to prefer the more raw, distorted side of spacemen 3 than their later stuff but that's not to say the music after sound of confusion isn't short of remarkable. This upload is from the 1994 re-issue on Taang! which includes 4 extra tracks. More people need to listen to this.
Sound of Confusion

Below is a beauty of a track. The first comment on youtube sums it all up.

Noise-A-Go-Go

So this one has stuck with me for a while and I get a huge grin on my face every time I pop the fucker in. With tracks like Cock Rock Incineration and Horrendously Anal-drilled, It's the type of album that'll make the right party get its dance on. So good makes you want to kill the cock rock greedy hog.

Holly Hunt

South Florida's humidity, hot weather, and constant traffic can have adverse affects on one's psyche and lead to a nagging case of lethargy. Some, on the other hand, seem to thrive in this environment despite it's ongoing right-winged ethos and conformity that keeps a portion of our community isolated from not only itself but from the rest of the country as well. So when we get something right, it usually comes out of nowhere; rolled up into a blob of fervor, passion, ire, and a fuck you attitude that the rest of the spoiled country should envy. Such is the case with the intense duo known as Holly Hunt.

Amplifier worshiping at its finest, reminiscent of bands such as Earth and the Melvins but experimenting and transcending auditory frequencies into a definite realm of their own. Having seen them evolve in their short existence has been an absolute pleasure for me as a fan, musician, and fellow friend of this two-piece ensemble of sinusoidal wave manipulation. Since they are in the process of recording, I can only provide early recordings of the band. To quote the late great Biggie, " if you don't know, now you know."

Knife-Fight Rock

A few months back, I attended a local garage rock show at Miami's Temple of Music and Mecca of all things smelly and drunk going by the name of Churchill's; A staple in the music community now in its 30's. I was speaking to the band in an after-party and mentioned my man-crush on Link Wray and the travesty that continues to this day by not having him in the rock and roll hall of fame. Link Wray was the first man to purposefully use distortion in his music along with the beloved power chord. The first person to use distortion happens to be none-other than Ike Turner, in Rocket 88, when he used an amplifier that had been "damaged" by rain. Link Wray would punch holes into his speakers to create his sound.

Rumble is a highlight track of Wray's that makes the listener want to fight, fuck, and drink all at the same time. Please do yourself a favor and join the Link Wray legion of crassitude.

Listen below and you won't have an option but to do so. By the way, this man was missing a lung but the vocals do nothing but display the pillars by which rock and roll became a genre of memetic disobedience.

Joe Yamanaka R.I.P.

Frontman for Japan's ominous psych monsters known as Flower Travellin' Band, Akira Joe Yamanaka, died at the age of 64 due to lung cancer. Another rock legend passes on. If you've no clue about Flower Travellin' Band and Joe's work with them, a good start would be Satori. Incredibly heavy psychedelic music, reminding many who are exposed to it for the first time of Japan's response to Led Zeppelin. I keep showing my respects late but it's better late than never and that's what I get for living on North America's cock shaft.

Thanks to PUKESKYWALKER for putting this up. Go!

King Dude

Putting all the comparisons and influences aside, King dude is a haunting one man doom folk project from Seattle, Washington. So before you decide to write this off because of the DIJ comparisons, well, shame on you. His recordings are a fine example of how simplicity can most times lead to sincerity. You can find his stuff on Clan Destine Records. Below, are two of my favorite songs written by the King, dude...

R.I.P. Conrad Schnitzler

Better late than never to give my respects to a music Pioneer of such magnitude as that of Conrad Schnitzler; Founder of the legendary Kluster and former member of Tangerine Dream. A musical pioneer like this dies and it takes me 4 days to find out. A piece of shit drug addict like Amy Winehouse croaks and I have to take the bombardment of news through every nook and cranny. The world is a sick place. R.I.P. Mr Schnitzler.

Arvid Tuba

Arvid Tuba is, as far as I'm informed, a one man project by Markus Arvidsson. Swedish industrial music and below is a gem that will not stop bumping. Minimal Synth at its very finest that has yet to be put on any of these compilations being put out by Minimal Wave and Walhalla Records . I have not been able to find this on mp3 anywhere on the net so I've provided one for you. Download it but I have to warn you that the file is a bit large for just one track. So I'll leave the quality reduction to you via any DAW.

Cumbia!

Been on a Cumbia fix lately. Must have gotten the urge after checking out a cumbia mix at
kicktokill
, which by the way, is a great, fun filled blog on metal, hip-hop, punk, random as hell videos that keep degenerates like you and I entertained.

This video is of an artist by the name of Chacalon. His band was called La Nueva Crema and I believe he also split his duties with another band by the name of Grupo Celeste. Although Chacalon has passed away, fans of Chicha music, which is a Peruvian derivative of Cumbia, have not let his young death be in vain. His music continue to inspire the poor working class of South America.

The guitars are a work of art. Chicha seems to incorporate the pulsating rhythm of cumbia, mix in andean chord structures, and throw in fuzz with reverb ala American surf rock for a sound music explorers will enjoy.

This is a treat. If you want to download a really dope comp, Go here,
here
and give it a spin.

Los orientales de Paramonga are another highlight in the compilation. Heavy hitting dance tracks. I'm so glad to see this stuff on the web.

Mary Goes Round

French 80's band. Darkwave? You decide. One thing is certain, the sound is melancholy and colorful at the same time. Must be the Casio tones that keep this song straddling that goth line instead of crossing over to the complete and utter dismay of that horrific genre. They toured with Sonic Youth at one point, that probably being their biggest success as a band. This song can be found on their album, 70 suns in the sky but for some reason, the shitty quality of the sound uploaded on youtube sounds much better.

Sardine V

The term post-punk gets thrown around like the local pub drunk who's had a few too many ales but it doesn't matter in this case. Call it what you will. Sardine V were from Australia and have a couple of releases under their belt; a 7" and a 12" lp labelled, I hate you. From this 12" is a track that no doubt cannot be topped in terms of simplicity and beauty called 'stuck on you'. A little synth, a Phil Spector influenced Ronettes beat, some chorus and reverb on the axe, and voila, audio jizm. Phoenix Hairpins' blog has it posted, so get your ass over there.

Terminal Cheesecake

Terminal Cheesecake were a British band from the late 80's that were ex-members of a band called the vibe. Noisy, Hypnotic in terms of their rhythmic patterns on drums, and, you guessed it, distorted guitars with massive amounts of delay on vocals. And with the notion that even a twelve year old in Zanzibar has access to the internet, it's no surprise websites and so called music experts can give boatloads of recommendations of bands at the whim of a so called sound but don't kid yourselves, they always get it wrong, don't they? That being said, I'm no so called expert but I do know what I like and this is the real deal. Terminal Cheesecakes' magnum opus is V.C.L which I thankfully got from discogs for a tolerable amount of money. (Upload coming soon!)

Simply incredible

The background music throughout this scene is by a Japanese band by the name of The Black, which, as far as I'm concerned, never had an official release nor recording. What has happened to the world? How has such transcendental and inspiring rock music like this died? I'm so glad to have access to these lost gems even if it's via digital means. The third eye is a beautiful thing. Psychedelic fuzz rock!

Tokyo Flashback Comps

I don't know about you but I am a HUGE fan of what Japan's psychedelic bands have to give to the rest and especially to our Americentric ideals and culture. It's thanks to Japan that psychedelia is alive and well but to just call it psychedelic seems to rob them of the credit they're due. When that word comes to mind, the cheese comes a tumblin' over with thoughts of farfisa organs, paisley everything, and advocates of the psychedelic movement like Timothy Leary educating squares on acid. The Japanese seem to have incorporated not only the "brown acid" feel to it but with an overwhelming, destructive sound of feedback, reverb, and let's not forget, NOISE!!!
Keiji Haino, The Jacks, Les Rallizes, Flower Travellin' Band, the list goes on and on. Today, great bands like LSD March will seriously fuck you up inside if you sit down and let the music go on cruise control. So without further a do, all the credit and love in the world to the giving people at wehavenozen.blogspot.com for putting up these ultra lovely compilations of that sound, ya dig?

The Night Gallery Compilation (alchemy records)

Here is the underrated and excellent compilation by the great Japanese label, Alchemy Records. This is one that has been known to give PSF's Tokyo Flashback Comps a run for their money. If blissed-out, feedback drenched psych is your mojo, then stick your dick or vagina in the mashed potatoes because it's going to be that kind of party. Featuring lsd march, miminokoto, Doodles, Chouzu, and Up-tight. Don't miss out!

Props to japanunderground.blogspot.com (RIP) for initially putting this up for people on the web.

Peruvian Cumbia ala Chopped and Skrewed?!

So I stumbled upon a blog called Murky Recess that posted a mix of slowed down Peruvian chicha music now going by the name of Cumbia Rebajada. It's incredibly catchy and you can't help imagining South and Central American kids getting their kicks out of this while huffing glue and paint thinners. PSYCHEDELIC.
